David Rovine
AT THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES, David Rovine was responsible for the day-to-day oversight and management of the Baltimore Orioles Spring Training facilities in Sarasota Florida. The Orioles year-round operation encompassed two separate venues; The Ed Smith Stadium Complex consisting of a 7500-seat professional baseball stadium with a visiting team locker room, eight concession stands with supporting kitchens, a 125-seat cafe and 5 luxury suites. In addition, there are 4 other professional baseball fields on the complex utilizing a total of 200,000 square feet of building space on a 36-acre campus. The second venue, Twin Lakes Park, located 12 miles away from the Ed Smith complex, is comprised of an 18,000 square foot fully equipped major league clubhouse and five lighted baseball fields.
David was responsible for the executive oversight of all facilities and the maintenance of all building systems. During his tenure he managed the building maintenance staff while coordinating all on-going capital improvements and construction issues from the $33M recent remodel of the complex. He worked directly with design architects, general and sub-contractors, and County building staff.
David provided leadership, direction, and training of all staff to create and ensure operating procedures that guaranteed the highest level of customer service and customer satisfaction. Areas of oversight included the box office, the food service operation, parking, greeters, ushers, operational staff, security personnel, the grounds crew, sponsorship sales and event creation and production.
David led the negotiations and financial deal structure for the first-ever concert in Oriole Park at Camden Yards, featuring BILLY JOEL. This event sold over 45,000 tickets and grossed more than 5 million dollars. The business structure included ticket pricing, all staffing, stage expenses, artist’s fee, and the shared revenue amongst the Orioles and Live Nation.
David created multiple unique events to establish and promote positive relationships with the County and its citizens including the very successful, “Arts in the Ballpark”. These and other events included several sold-out performances by the Sarasota Orchestra and the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe as well as multiple free Halloween nights and movies in the outfield for local families.
AT SMG, David Rovine opened the Genesee Theatre, a $23 million, 2500 seat, newly renovated historic theatre in Waukegan, Illinois. He created the operational systems, hired, and trained staff, developed the marketing plan, and established the booking and show policies.
David met financial goals in the first year of operation at the Genesee Theatre through aggressive booking of high-quality acts and responsible fiscal management, and moved to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Florida after three successful years at the Genesee.
He managed the Mahaffey with a focus on being an effective liaison with the Mayor, City Council, fundraising groups, and the public at large and collaborated with a wide range of diverse producers and arts groups to create a venue that was an integral part of the local community. He developed relationships with local business leaders that resulted in new and lucrative private and corporate sponsorships.
David booked all entertainment including nationally known musical and comedy acts as well as Broadway touring productions.
AT GULFSTREAM PARK, David Rovine transformed an existing sporting facility into a high-profile entertainment destination, making it the largest producer of outdoor concerts in the South Florida market during each season. He created and conceptualized the unique and highly successful promotional vehicle, “The Gulfstream Park Concert Series.”
David produced, advanced, and promoted over 180 concerts over nine seasons that utilized a wide variety of musical styles, including classic rock, pop, rhythm & blues, and jazz. Acts included Huey Lewis & the News, Bryan Adams, The Doobie Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Michael McDonald, Sugar Ray, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, and Styx. Each musical format targeted a different demographic intended to attract a new and different audience.
He conceptualized and produced the “Gulfstream Park Women’s Club,” a luncheon series of speaker presentations featuring, among others, Ivanna Trump, Erin Brockovich, Dr. Ruth Wertheimer, and Deborah Norville. This high-profile event successfully targeted women of substance in the local community and introduced a brand-new audience to world class thoroughbred racing.
David negotiated all artists’ contracts and developed and maintained excellent relationships with booking agents and artist’s representatives in addition to establishing positive relationships with the performance and stagehand unions.
All these distinctive marketing concepts increased revenues and attendance by 34% over a nine-year period in an industry facing annual declines in on-site attendance and financial growth.
Rovine was responsible for a $3.7 million advertising and promotion budget for each 4-month season. He hired and directed advertising agencies and media buyers to support and implement the marketing plan.
At Gulfstream he onboarded and trained the sales and marketing staff, including group sales personnel, sky suite sales personnel, and the event production team.
AT ONCE UPON A STAGE, in Orlando Florida, Rovine turned around a struggling theatre operation and through creative marketing and excellent fiscal management the venue became a high-profile successful attraction in an extremely competitive marketplace, He produced and directed over 250 full scale musical productions, comedies, and musical reviews.
David negotiated all union contracts, fees and payments and interviewed and hired all related technical personnel including costume designers, set designers, lighting designers, and stage managers.
David hired and directed the talent for each production including union talent and stars, such as Delta Burke, Mickey Rooney, Donald O’Connor, Allan Sues, and Ted Wass.
